Marian Zielinski
Fiber Artist
Marian Zielinski is a fiber artist who incorporates painting, printmaking, computer graphic design, and photography into her quilting. The pieces on display in Painting with Fabric are created by “sun painting” where different colors are painted on cotton canvas, then put outside in the sun to dry. Different shaped objects are placed on the canvas, which causes the paint to fade into different shades and leave designs on the canvas. Free motion stitching creates the final quilted product.
Marian is Professor Emerita, and former Scenic and Lighting Designer for Mercer University in Macon, Georgia where she lives. She earned a B.A. in Theatre from the University of New York at Buffalo and her M.F.A. in Costume Design from Illinois State University. Marian received the 2017 Quilts=Art=Quilts Award for Surface Design. Her art quilts have been published in Incite 3–The Art of Storytelling: The Best in Mixed Media, Quilt National 13: The Best in Contemporary Quilts, 1,000 Artisan Textiles, Fiber Art Now, Art Quilt Quarterly, Studio Art Quilt Associates Journal, and Quilting Arts Magazine. She has published essays on the arts in The American Journal of Semiotics and presented papers about the arts across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan.
