BACKSTORY:

Underwater 1 is the result of a class assignment. During my year long SCAD experiment, as a graduate student, my drawing peers and I asked our professor to provide a specific assignment, as opposed to free-ranging as we desired. We found it far easier to accept the challenge as a kind of game, rather than impose our own criteria on ourselves. This was the assignment: Draw, with any medium, a CONTAINER of some sort, with upwards of over 100 of the same thing inside; with the final drawing size parameter being no smaller than 30″ x 40″.  Challenge accepted. As the drawing developed, I recall counting and recounting the fish to guarantee I would meet the quota without surpassing it, which of course was NOT the point at all. I will never draw another fish; paint one maybe.
