Sergeant Subby was an American bull terrier mix who served in the 26th Division of the 102nd Infantry during World War I. He is America’s most honored dog war hero, having served in the trenches of France through eighteen battles.  With his heightened senses of hearing and smell, Stubby learned how to warn the troops of incoming artillery and mustard gas attacks. He even captured a German spy by biting him on the seat of the pants and holding him until men from his division arrived. Wounded twice, Stubby was smuggled home following the war. He passed away in 1926.
